sun tan

Sun tanning is the process wherein skin colour is darkened or tanned. Sun tanning is caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds that causes genetic damage to cells on your outmost layer of skin. The skin tries to prevent further injury by producing melanin (the pigment that gives our skin its colour) that results in skin darkening which is what we call a tan.

Is suntan good for you?

It’s said that there is no safe amount of tanning. The increase in skin pigment called melanin, which causes the tan colour change in your skin is a sign of damage. Tanning isn’t bad for you just because it comes with the risk of burning, which can cause skin cancer. Tanning is bad for you because your body doesn’t even begin to tan until dangerous ultraviolet (UV) rays have pierced your skin and started to mess with your DNA.

How to get rid of suntan at home?

Chickpea scrub/pack.

Mix a tablespoon of chickpea flour with a teaspoon of turmeric, some lemon juice and curd to form a thick paste. Apply on the face and neck, leave it on for half an hour and wash it off. All the ingredients are natural, de-tanning ingredients

Lemon juice and honey.

Lemon juice has bleaching effect which helps in removing tan quickly.

Take fresh lemon juice, add some honey to it and apply on your skin. Let it stay for 30 minutes and wash off. You can also add some sugar to the lemon juice and gently to slough off dead cells from the surface.

Yoghurt and tomato.

Tomato is rich in antioxidants that help in brightening skin. Yoghurt on the other hand contains lactic acid which softens the skin. Take an aw tomato and remove the skin. Blend it with 1-2 tsp of fresh yoghurt Use this paste on your tan, and wash off after 20 minutes.

Coconut milk.

Soak a cotton ball in fresh and organic coconut milk and dab it all over the face. Leave it on till it’s absorbed into the skin or dries completely. Wash it off with a mild cleanser.
